Hummus is traditionally served with flat bread, but equally delicious as a dip with carrots, celery and cucumber. Or try it with crackers or tortillas. Sprinkled with a bit of chili or paprika .. stop it .. I’m making myself hungry!
But the great thing about hummus is that’s so easy to make yourself. And if you’ve got a Vitamix you can whizz it up in less than 10 minutes flat .. Here we go!
What do you need to make your own delicious hummus?
- 2 cans (900 g) chickpeas. Keep the liquid from 1 can to one side.
- 35 g (1/4 cup) sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (I used chili infused olive oil .. delicious!)
- 60 ml (1/4 cup) lemon juice – fresh if you can, it really does taste that much better.
- 1 garlic clove, peeled – yep, for you eagle eyed photo viewers – this was missing from the picture .. whoops!! I added it in the batch though..
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- ⅛ teaspoon salt – I guesstimated this.. – who wants to mess about with an eight of a teaspoon?
How to make your hummus
Well, you kinda just chuck it all into the Vitamix .. (yep, there’s the garlic!) So, just to recap, the chickpeas from 2 cans, liquid from 1 can of chickpeas, sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and cumin all go into the Vitamix in that order. With the Vitamix there is no need for chopping or peeling .. it came out delicious just as it was. Secure the lid.
- Select Variable number 1.
- Turn the machine on (always helps!). Slowly increase the speed from 1 to Variable 10, then to High. It gets noisy guys, but stick with it!
- Blend for 1 minute. Use the tamper to push the ingredients into the blades if you have to. Mine mixed very well, but sometimes it needs a bit of a helping hand.
- Season to taste with salt, pepper or any other spices that take your preference. I added some chili powder on the top which tasted great and just gave a bit of colour to it.
Hummus and Vitamix
Believe it or not, there’s a lot of hummus debate with “camp PEEL” and “camp NO PEEL” divided opinions on whether to peel the chick peas or not. Personally I love this recipe and the Vitamix does a great job of mixing all the ingredients. So much so that I don’t think it warrants the time it takes for me to sit and remove all the skins. However if you’re on “camp PEEL”, then of course the choice is entirely yours.
All in all, I just love how quick the Vitamix allow you to make some of the everyday stuff we buy in the shops, but without any of the preservatives. Just nice and fresh ingredients without added numbers or ingredients I can’t pronounce.
